B4B: Sin and Punishment

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2nd Corinthians 5 vs 17

If we truly are made new, why do we still have to suffer the consequences of the mistakes we made in the past? Is this a contradiction in scripture?
